YOUR BABY IS OUT THERE

You too can have a baby in your home. While there are no guarantees, most people find a child to adopt within a year through the process of “open” adoption. As a single person, or as gay and lesbian partners, you can become a parent through open adoption.

Unlike traditional adoption, in which the birth and adopting parents do not know each other’s identity, an open adoption encourages a working relationship between the parties. As an adopting parent, you become actively involved in the search for your child. You will meet or speak directly with the birth parents, learn who they are, their backgrounds and medical histories. At the same time, birth parents will get to know you and gain the confidence that you are the right person to raise their child.

Your baby will live with you from birth without placement in foster care. The adoption is usually final within six to seven months. Your age, race, religion, marital status, or sexual orientation pose no barrier to open adoption.

WHY DO I NEED A LAWYER?

Adoption is a complex mix of social, emotional and legal issues. Though social workers are trained to deal with psychological questions, the competent and caring attorneys at Adams & Romer will also guide you through the entire legal and emotional process, culminating in a court decree declaring you to be the child’s legal parent.

In addition to helping you find desirable birth parents, we will help you work with them successfully, facilitate financial transactions through our attorney trust account, recommend competent counselors, and guide you and your birth parents through the social service or agency process. We will terminate the birth father’s rights and if the birth parent is from another state, resolve any interstate legal issues. Our attorneys will ensure that your adoption is legally sound in all respects.

California adoption law constantly changes. At Adams & Romer we deal daily with the issues, and we are committed to keeping up with the changes and nuances in the law that may affect your adoption.

Adoption is a positive way to build a loving family. Open adoption enables birth parents and the adoptive parents to have control over the adoption process. You will be an active participant, determining your relationship with your birth parents during the pregnancy, at the hospital, and for the future. I have found that success is more likely when clients are full partners in the adoption process.

I love my work because it allows me to use my expertise in adoption law to help people create families. No lawyer can guarantee success, but as my clients you will receive my full attention and support with the goal of bringing a child into your home. That is my promise.
